Hello to all !  In this last post, I would like to tell a little about myself. In my childhood, I was always very much applied to school, I loved to learn about natural sciences. During several years of my life, I dedicated myself to investigate more about biology and chemistry, even in high school I chose to take scientific courses rather than humanities. I was always interested in working with animals, so I wanted to study marine biology because I was also passionate about the sea.  As time went by, I realized that my place was not with animals and nature, but that my interest was in social action. I started to get involved with the student demands of my school, I actively participated in protests, I got involved in the political events of the country and decided to engage in activism with social organizations. Thus, in 2017, I came to "Amnistía Internacional", a global organization that fights for human rights in vulnerable societies.  For two years, I participat...

My postgraduate studies !

The most important factor that convinced me to study sociology is my identity. As a trans person, I think it is important that our experiences should be studied from a social perspective and that we should be considered as part of historical development. Latin American authors (such as Leonor Silvestri) argue that one of society's strongest tools of control is gender. That's why my dream of graduating in sociology is to be able to complement my studies with a postgraduate degree in gender.  For now, my preferences for further studies are the University of Bath (in the UK), the Lund University (in Sweden) and the University of Santiago de Compostela (in Spain). I hope to be able to achieve my goal and continue learning!

My favorite artist: Gilda

When I think back to my childhood, I think of those afternoons with my mom listening to the music she loved. That's when I met Gilda. She was a very famous Argentine cumbia singer in the 90s. She was very loved in Latin America, she has very famous songs, such as "No me arrepiento de este amor" (which was also performed by the Argentine band "Attaque 77") or "Paisaje", performed by "Vicentico", who is also an Argentine singer. I like her music so much because her melody is very cheerful, plus she had an angelic voice. She was also very kind to her fans, she let them on stage at her concerts and hugged everyone. Sadly, she passed away in 1996 due to a car accident, but her legacy will live on, at least in me.

My favorite photo

First of all, my favorite photo is not of a place. This photograph is many years old. I was still a little girl between 3 or 4 years old.  The people next to me are my grandparents, Ana and Eduardo. My mom took the picture on a winter morning, they were testing my grandmother's new camera.  It's my favorite picture because I'm with the two people I love the most. They have raised me, from the time I attended kindergarten until I graduated from high school. My grandmother, Ana, taught me English when I was 6 years old. I learned how to pronounce some colors, how to say hello and how to ask permission to go to the bathroom. She certainly knew a lot!

My favorite piece of technology !

One of my daily hobbies is listening to music. When I was a kid, I had an MP3 player on which I listened to pop music, but when I turned thirteen I got my first phone. Before Spotify existed, I would download all my favorite songs onto it. I would get really frustrated when I didn't have any more space to store the songs.  On my phone I can also do other activities, like taking pictures, or watching series. I also order my academic responsibilities on it ! If I were to think about what my life would be like without a cell phone, it would definitely be too boring. I wouldn't be able to distract myself or be responsible with my homework.

Why I choose to study sociology?

Hello ! I have to confess that I'm not a such big fan of the humanities. In my childhood I was a big fan of biology and chemistry. Even in high school I was a student who belonged to the science class. I wanted to be a marine biology, because I love animals so much. But everything has changed the time I turn 16 when I started to be an activist from the LGBTQ rights in my school. I met some feminist friends who taught me a lot of philosophy and history. That's how I discovered some careers that I'm interested, like Anthropology or Psychology. But I decided to study Sociology. By far, My experience at the university has been good. I made friends who are passionate about the career and we studied together. I love learning new theories about the society ! In the future, I would like to work in an ONG specialized in protecting the rights of trans children and adolescents in the country, like OTD or Amanda Jofré.

Blog 1 - Personal Information.

Hi there, welcome to my blog :) I'm Alicia Meza. I was born on August 22nd in Santiago, Chile. I am a member of a family of 5. If I include the family of my older sister, we are 7.  I was raised in Peñalolen with my grandmothers.  I don't like to talk about where I studied when I was on the school. But, at the moment, I am a second year student of sociology at the Universidad de Chile. Unfortunately,  everything has been online. My dad was a very popular soccer player in my community. He was part of a team called Cultural Esfuerzo. Everybody was a big fan of it.  I like some sports too. I like to do yoga, swimming and biking. Also, I love gardening. I spend most of my time taking care of my plants, and also learning about them !
